Black Opal: This is the rarest and subsequently most expensive of the opal gems. Quality black opal displays brilliant colour with dark base colours. Mined mainly at Lightning Ridge and surrounding areas.
White Opal: This is the gem that most people are familiar with. Colour patterns on pale base colour. Mined mainly in South Australia.
Boulder Opal: Colour bars attached to host rock, ironstone. This gem is predominantly cut with the ironstone left on the back. Mined mainly in Queensland.
Crystal Opal: Black and white opal comes in the form of crystal opal. This is a gem that has a high degree of translucence due to the lack of common opal or potch within the gem.
